What Is Internet Of Things
I am sure you have come across this phrase severally whether it is at your workplace or among your friend. IoT has become a popular topic of discussion with different people giving suggestions of what is expected of this new technology. It can be so frustrating and embarrassing when all your friends or co-workers talk about a topic that you have no idea about. All you can do is remain quiet and listen without sharing your point of view. The good news is that you no longer have to go through that awkward moment when everyone is talking about IoT and you do not have an idea of what it is.
What first comes into your mind when the phrase Internet of things is mentioned? Different people have come up with different definitions of Internet of Things; most definitions are complex and hard to understand, especially if you do not have an interest in technology. Internet of Things is the connectivity of devices, censors, animals and people to each other and other networks such as the internet.
Here are some more definitions:
“The IoT refers to devices of all types, such as security monitors, vacuum cleaners and mobile phones, connected to the Internet and to each other to create a more interconnected user experience.” Jalen Chung and Frances Huang
“The Internet of Things, or IoT, is defined as a worldwide network of “things” that include identifiable devices, appliances, equipment, machinery of all forms and sizes with the intelligence to seamlessly connect, communicate and control or manage each other to perform a set of tasks with minimum intervention” Leslie d’Monte
"The Internet of Things refers to the unique identification and Internetization of everyday objects. This allows for human interaction and control of these "things" from anywhere in the world, as well as device to device interaction without the need for human involvement."
“The Internet of Things is real, but it is not about accessing everything from everywhere. It’s about accessing what is necessary in a way that provides the most value, and the right communication infrastructure will ensure that this is exactly what happens.”
Mike Granby • President • Red Lion Controls
To make it even easier for you to understand IoT, here are examples from different sources. Imagine coming from work after a tiring day and as you approach the door, a sensor automatically unlocks the door then the door's wireless radio signals the network, which prompt the light to turn on or the house thermostat at comfortable temperature based on your past usage. Other great examples of IoT that I found to be interesting is from Jacob Morgan Check out more IoT examples.
I am sure you are now beginning to understand why IoT is a growing topic of conversation among different groups of people. You can now imagine how different and interesting life would be with the implementation of the internet of things. We will be able to save more time, energy and resources by being more efficient So what is your understanding of IoT?
We love 1CT- A dedicated network could accelerate digital transformation in unimaginable ways. The internet of Things (10T) has set new standards of what is expected of new technology. It is a worldwide network of “things” that include identifiable devices, appliances, equipment, machinery of all forms and sizes with the intelligence to seamlessly connect, communicate and control or manage each other to perform a set of tasks with minimum intervention.
Imagine coming from the office after a long day and as you approach the door, a sensor automatically unlocks the door and still prompts light to form in the house based on your past usage. The 10T has given innovators the privilege to needle towards new broadband technologies that could one day make. Our communications move faster than the speed of light! The million dollar question however is, are we ready for higher broadband capacity?
Higher broadband capacity is going to surprise us all, apart from the fast downloads and learning resources that we are so commonly used to, the internet of Things will give us controlled internet experiences like never before. There’s nothing better than a basic connection of everyday objects to the internet and to one another, with the goal being to provide uses with smarter, more efficient experiences. Mobile based and devices, cloud-based applications and the social media will never be the same again.
The internet of things basically work when motion sensors, a central hub (allows different devices to correct) and cloud services (enables the collection and analysis of data) combine together. Since so many companies are currently working on different connected devices, seamless overall compatibility will not happen. The best way to enjoy different level of I0T is getting a hub that supports different wireless technology.
Internet policy challenges that may affects 10T
• Internet governance forum
• Lack of proper privacy/security
• Legal meaning weight of the digital signature.
• Intellectual property copyright, patents etc
• Digital vellum (presentation of data/software)
The internet of things is transforming the everyday physical objects that surround us into ecosystem that will enrich our lives. In the new I0T economy, devices and sensors can be eyes and ears for companies, law abiding citizens or even hackers. The I0T is inevitable. It represents a convergence in miniaturization, wireless connectivity, increased data storage and most importantly, sensors.
The future for the I0T is certain. Although Asia is leading the march towards a better Internet of Things future, Europe and North America are lagging behind and say they don’t really have plans to boast their I0T investments. Either ways, the 10T has been for years, it has just gotten to a wide consumer’s space. It is here. Be ready!
